I joined Indiana Blue Cross-Blue Shield as an accountant right out of college in 1972 and worked there until 1981.  Joe was  Senior Vice President of Finance.   I was often in meetings with him, some of them one on one.  Joe was very knowledgeable about the insurance industry.  Under his guidance, BCBS acquired its much-wanted life insurance company, allowing BCBS to broaden its product offering.

Joe had a healthy respect for making a buck, because he knew that a financially strong company was in the best interest of the policyholders and the employees.  But it always mattered to him how something was accomplished.  He stood steadfastly for honesty and integrity in how you went about your work.  He was a good mentor for us all.  Many times in my career I was at the fork in the road with regard to an ethical matter and Joe's example influenced me to make the right choice. 

I first met Joe while he was associated with John Biddinger in 2004. I invited Joe to join the Board of Directors of Thomas & Skinner, Inc. He served as a faithful director and consultant to T&S for 15 years. In addition he became a very close personal friend and terrific encourager. He will be sadly missed. To Joe:

I met Joe when I joined Financial Executives International [FEI] in Jan 1981, Indianapolis Chapter. As CFO at Blue Cross he did me/a small  company in No Vernon a big favor by just following through on a situation. We hit it off well & he mentored me somewhat through our monthly meetings, usually choosing to be seated next to each other. This continued after he left Blue Shield & into his consulting [I was a resource to him 2-3 times] & retirement. We served on the BOD for FEI twice and I considered him a valued friend.
