LAURENCE FRANCIS FITZGERALD (age 83) of Annandale, VA, passed peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2020. Born in Detroit on January 30, 1937, to Frank P. and Clara O’Connor Fitzgerald, Larry is survived by his sister Yvonne (John) Lowry of Detroit, MI; two sons, Timothy (Stephanie) of Ashburn, VA, and Michael (Lorna) Fitzgerald of Falls Church, VA; two daughters, Maureen (Robert) Hash of Brandy Station, VA, and Kerry (David) Cantwell of Durham, NC; former wife Joan Fitzgerald; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Clara; his brother, Paul; and his sisters Patricia and Lynn. Larry was a proud member of the Detroit Catholic Central High School graduating class of 1955 and a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Red Wings. His love of the American automobile led him to a career at Ford Motor Company. After working in the automobile industry, Larry spent the remainder of his career working in government. He was proud of his work as administrative assistant to US Rep. Jack McDonald of Michigan from 1966 until 1973. Larry then worked for over two decades for the Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration as a program analyst, furthering a love for railroads that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. In his later years, he traveled to Ireland as frequently as possible, often accompanied by his family. His love of his Irish heritage is only surpassed by his devotion to his Catholic faith and service to others. Larry was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Annandale for over thirty years. He was an avid reader and history buff and enjoyed being an amateur photographer and landscaper. Larry will be lovingly remembered for his kindness, his sense of humor, and his outgoing nature. Rosary will be streaming online at 5 pm, Wednesday, May 20. Details will be available on Demaine Funeral Home website. Limited visitation will be held Wednesday, May 20, from 6 pm – 8 pm at Demaine Funeral Home on Backlick Road in Springfield and will include managed social distancing based on ten-person capacity limits, and a private graveside ceremony will be held Thursday, May 21, at Fairfax Memorial Park. A memorial mass will take place at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in the fall followed by a celebration of life, details on Demaine website once confirmed.
