Federico Alexander (Alex) Leon was born in Havana, Cuba on September 28, 1955. He passed away unexpectedly on June 20, 2020. Alex is predeceased by his father, Federico Julio Leon, and his older stepbrother, Federico Oscar Leon. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gema; his children, Alexandra, Jennifer, and David; his mother, Nelia; his brother, George, and sister, Vivian. Dr. Alex was a board-certified family physician specializing in integrative functional medicine to help restore and maintain your well-being. He ran a family medicine practice with his brother, George Leon, in Waldorf, MD, for over 25 years. In his last few years, he was part of the team at Rose Wellness in Oakton, VA. He had a passion for his profession and his patients’ care, synthesizing conventional medicine with alternative modalities such as ozone therapy, osteopathy, and others. He was practicing “alternative medicine” before it was even an alternative and lived to see many of these therapies enter into the mainstream. Dr. Alex was loved by his patients for his empathetic nature, his humor, and his ability to truly listen to their concerns. He was first and foremost a healer. An avid student for and of life, Alex was constantly seeking knowledge in all areas of life, a follower of the mantra: “the Truth is out there.” He was a compassionate, charismatic, genuine, loving and gentle soul. He had a true vigor for life and sharing in all experiences to be had here. Travel was an important part of his life, in particular his time in Spain, where he met his dear wife and life partner Gema. He had a true love for family and could always be relied on to give of his abundant guidance, love and reassurance. Even in the most difficult of times, he was able to bring humor to every situation. Embracing his Cuban culture, he loved to dance, sing, gather with friends and eat, drink, and be merry; he loved and appreciated life, and was loved and appreciated, in return, by it. He had a genuine interest in nature and the world around him, and loved all parts of this world, but had a particular affection for the beach and the sea. He leaves behind for those who survive him a large legacy of selfless service, wonder, joy, spontaneity, curiosity and kindness.
