Obituary of Kent Loren Smith Sr.
Kent Loren Smith, Sr. 78, of Indianapolis, died peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2020 at IU North Hospital. He was born July 24, 1942 in Springfield, OH to the late L. Loren and Ferne (Pett) Smith. Kent Sr. graduated from North Central High School in 1960. He was a 1964 graduate of Indiana University and member of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. Kent Sr. was employed from 1965 to 1982 with Ryerson Steel in Indianapolis as an inside salesman. From 1983 until 2017 he sold advertising specialties. He met his wife Barbara (Sanford) Smith in Indianapolis in 1966. They were married in Bridgeport, Connecticut on October 15, 1966. They then returned to Indianapolis. Kent is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Barbara (Sanford) Smith; his loving sons, Kent L. Smith Jr., and Scott A. (Raina) Smith; his devoted grandchildren, Elizabeth “Libby” and Hayden Smith. Kent had been a member of boy scouting for over 66 years. During that time, he attended national Jamborees, served as scout master for Troop 18 in North Star District, was a Vigil member of OA, a Silver Beaver recipient, and a Wood Badger where he served on two courses. Kent was a longtime and dedicated member at Second Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, Calvin Prather Masonic Lodge #717, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, where he had served as president of the Reception Unit and Kentucky Colonels. Visitation for Kent will begin at 6:30 pm on Monday, August 3rd at Leppert Mortuary – Nora Chapel followed by Masonic services at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 4th at Second Presbyterian Church Sanctuary followed by entombment at Crown Hill Cemetery. Masks and social distancing protocols are required. Memorial contributions are suggested in Kent’s name to Shriner’s Hospital for Children in care of the Murat Shrine 510 North New Jersey St., Indianapolis, IN 46205 or to our National Parks Foundation.
