James Walter Sapyta

James Walter Sapyta age 81, peacefully passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021. He is survived by his children, Tony (Kathy) Sapyta of Griffith, IN, Diane Brehm of Rapid City, South Dakota and Peggy (Ed) Sarwacinski of Valparaiso, IN; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Frank Robert Sapyta; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Sapyta; Walter Sapyta, John Sapyta, Julie Hightower, Helen Conley, Mary Brink, Stanley Sapyta, Sophie Kornas, Caroline Smith, Jennie Gordon, and Ann Eubanks. James was born August 26, 1939 in Hammond, IN to the late Anthony and Eva Sapyta and attended Hammond Technical High School. On December 9, 1961 he married the love of his life, Mary Skaggs and together they raised 3 children. James retired from the USPS as a mail carrier with 35 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, golf, bowling, pinochle, and most of all spending time with his growing family and friends. James was a kind and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will truly be missed by all that knew him. A Gathering will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 12:00-1:45 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue Crown Point, IN. Private interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Crown Point, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity. Due to the current conditions of Covid-19, masks are required for attendance at the funeral home and cemetery.
