Obituary of Joann Jewel Sturgill
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Joann Sturgill, a loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on Sunday, October 13, 2019. She left us while sleeping peacefully at her home in Coal City, surrounded by her children. She was 87 years old. Born in Indian Mills, WV (Summers County), she witnessed amazing changes to her world, having lived during World War II and working in Beckley at the Pincrest Hospital and in Oak Hill at the Oak Hill Hospital. In 1949 she married the love of her life, Lawrence W. Sturgill who served in World War II in the Philippines. Together they served the Lord for over 40 years and were members of the Stotesbury Community Church for 20 years. Joann was the beloved mother of David Sturgill and wife, Vicky of Beckley, Jeanette Cook of Oak hill, Harold Sturgill and companion, Susie Green of Coal City, and Terrie Rubeck and husband, Chad of Oak Hill. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her step-brother, Charles of Oak Hill. In addition to her parents, Charles Biggs and Anna Kirk Biggs, she was preceded in death by her step-sisters, Genevieve and Virginia; and step-brothers, Stanley and Earl. Joann lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker and health care worker during the 1940’s and the 1950’s. She loved to cook, she kept an immaculate house, and was highly skilled at cake decorating and making floral arrangements for any occasion. She also loved to sew and spent countless hours with Marcella Worrell and Edith Bell making quilts for loved ones. Joann enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were always stopping by just to visit. Most of all, she loved her family and instilled in her children values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, October 16th and from 1:00-2:00 pm, Thursday, October 17th at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 17th in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor David Wilson officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Tower Garden of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.blueridgefuneralhome.com. Blue Ridge Funeral home & Crematorium has the honor of serving the family.
