Vera Hannigan, born August 20, 1932, a mother, friend, daughter, sister, lifelong learner, wife and dedicated public servant, was called home on September 23, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband John Hannigan who passed on January 29th of this year. A memorial service is planned at her church, Reston Bible Church, for November 17, 2011 at 3:00 PM. The following day, November 18th, Vera will be inurned at 10:00 AM alongside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery attended by a small family gathering.

Vera Hannigan lived life boldly and well, setting a high standard for public involvement and service. If the ultimate question concerning each of our lives were to be posed as to whether the world is a better place BECAUSE we were here, those of us fortunate to have known her would join in staunch support with a resounding "YES !". Thank you Vera!

And thank you Mom.

Your Loving Children

Vera and I worked and sat in close proximity to each other several years ago at EPA. She quickly became my most valued emotional supporter during the health trials I was having with my elderly father. She is one of the best, most honorable, kind yet strong and intelligent individuals that I have met during my long career. She's been in my thoughts and prayers since I've heard of her illness.

I will miss her always. I will also remember the outrageous, JOYOUS, laugh out loud times we've shared. We both shared the high and low lights of our lives as well as her love and devotion to John and the kids and grandkids.

She lived a wonderful life and I feel blessed to have known her. I'll always remember her fondly and think of her whenever I hear the soundtrack from "O Brother Where Art Thou". From her example, I've learned much about life, love and dedication.

Please convey our thoughts and prayers to her family.

Vera was my first friend I met when we moved to Reston, back in 1978. We were involved with every GOP campaign from then on and oh, what fun we had together. Vera and John loved their country and their community. She was a wonderful person and a wonderful friend. We shall miss her greatly.

We shared many good times with Vera (and John) over the years, worked together in many political campaigns, the Greater Reston Republican Club, broke bread often, played Trivial Pursuit -- lots of great memories. She was a beautiful "Lady" in every sense of the word. May your memories of Vera comfort you at this sad time.
