Joan R. Skonie

Joan R. Skonie peacefully passed away on her 86th birthday, Thursday, September 13, 2018. She is survived by her children, Selene (late Ronald) Skonie-Hardin, Steven (Aldona) Skonie and Sharon (Thomas) Martin; grandchildren, Jonathan Skonie, Joseph Skonie and Antoinette Martin; brother, Roy Wulatin, brother in law, Raymond (Henrietta) Skonieczny and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, John and Antoinette Wulatin; husband, Lawrence Chester Skonie; sister, Kathleen (late Robert) Zoretich; sisters and brothers in law, Casimir, Chester, Theo, Ben, Jean, Alice, Ceal, Rose and Tina and many nieces and nephews. Joan was born on September 13, 1932 in Chicago, IL and was a graduate of Bowen High School. On July 17, 1954, she married the love of her life, Larry Skonie and together they raised 3 children on the East Side. She worked for several years as a teller at East Side Bank and was a longtime member of the Croatian Fraternal Union. She enjoyed keeping up on current events, reading, sewing and traveling with Larry. Joan was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and dear friend to many and will truly be missed by all whose lives she touched. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church (8303 Taft Street Merrillville, IN) with Rev. Peter J. Muha officiating. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Crown Point, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Monday morning at the church from 9:00 AM until time of Mass. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the charity of their choice.
