Obituary of Alvin Kaltofen
Alvin Herbert Kaltofen, age 84, of Evansville, passed away July 13, 2013 at Deaconess Hospital after a long illness. Alvin was born June 9, 1929 to the late Herbert and Lorene (Welz) Kaltofen. He graduated from Central High School in 1947. As a teenager, Alvin played the drums in various bands and later with Bob Minnette’s Mellowtones. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War in the Communications Corps and was a life member of VFW Post #1114. Mr. Kaltofen had worked for Alcoa for over 30 years before retiring. He was a member of the Hadi Shrine and past president of Hadi Shrine Brass Band. Alvin was a member of the Pote’s Notes, a Dixieland Band. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Central UMC Wednesday Friends Group, U.S. Sunday School Class, Riverbend Association, Evansville Athletic Club and the Kennel Club. He had volunteered his time with the Hadi Transportation Group, transporting patients and families to the Shriner Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Meals on Wheels, American Red Cross Blood Services and radio reading services at WNIN. In his retirement he enjoyed counted cross stitch and developing cross stitch graphs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his special cousin, Emma Dreisch. Surviving Alvin are his wife of 54 years, Doris (Grimes) Kaltofen; two daughters, Kathy (David) Foerster of Connersville, IN and Karla (Brian) Uhde of Evansville; three grandchildren, Matt (Jessi) Foerster of Indianapolis, Maria (Matt) Nischwitz of Dupont, WA and Sarah (Tim) Heinke of Charleston, SC and six great grandchildren, Lily, Anna and Will Foerster, Sarah and Jack Nischwitz and Julia Heinke. Also surviving is the family of Myron and Mamie Hartman, very special friends from Hamburg, PA. Funeral services for Alvin will be held at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Pierre Funeral Home, Rev. Theodore Tempel officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs of both units 2900 and 5600 at Deaconess Hospital and Holiday Village for their kindness and caring.
