Barney C Black, Champion-at-Large

Barney C Black passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 29, 2015 after a valiant battle against his ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). His most recent job titles

included in reverse order: Senior Systems Engineer, Principal Engineer, Engineering Supervisor, and Sales Engineer. Job titles from the beginning included

TV repairman, low-cost housing renovator, diving manager, nondestructive tester of nuclear submarines, and aluminum siding salesman. However, the title

he loved most of all was Champion-at-Large for the Integrated Product Teams of the US Coast Guard’s failed Deepwater Project. Hobbies included Vietnam

War protestor, SCUBA diver, and Kindle reader. Barney also served on the Board of Directors of the International Hydrofoil Society and both published its

newsletter and maintained its website. Barney’s lifelong motto is: Semper Cogitans -- Nil Amplius Solvendum (Always Thinking – No Extra Charge). He is

survived by his wife and two sons; Helena C Black, Robert J. Black, and R. Terry Black; and remembered fondly by his brother and sister, John R. Black and

Nancy Dillard. Finally, this from beyond the grave: “This is Barney Black. I approved this obituary.”

I so enjoyed working with Barney on the Deepwater program. We worked in the same section so we talked every day. I appreciated his wry humor particularly when "the management" made one of those decisions. He was so intelligent. Helena, I am so sorry for you and your sons. I remember the times you had me over to dinner and gave me tickets for the Kennedy Ctr when you couldn't use them. Having lost my mother to ALS, I know the devastation that occurs. My prayers are with you and your sons.

Helena, John, and Terry, you guys already know Barney was the greatest. Just thinking of Barney can make me smile although right now it makes me cry because I can not believe he is gone. I have the fondest memories of him from when I first met him in the mid-70's. He was one of those people who just connected. One of my best memories is how he truly honored friendship. When we both lived in Chesapeake he walked in my house one day and opened the cabinets saying, "What we got to eat?" I don't remember what we ate, but I do remember afterward he just laid down on the couch and took a nap. His ease , his humor, his everything always warmed my heart and made me feel special. May God bless you and comfort you. I am so sorry.

Your "outlaws" as you called us, since we were no longer brothers and sisters in-law, will miss you. Our thoughts are with Helena and your sons.

Para: Helena C Black

Querida Helena:

Vivian, Fabio e hijos
