Janet Louise Gasteiger

November 12, 1943October 8, 2020

If you knew Janet, you knew a bigger-than-life spirit in a small package.

Vibrant and energetic while thoughtful and generous, Janet had a gift for touching people’s lives and bringing optimism and hope. She knew the needs of those she loved, offering support in all ways she could.

Janet was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She pursued various interests professionally, through volunteer work, and through classes and studies. She really shined in every role she played, because she genuinely cared about the people around her and she was always striving to be the best person she could be.

Janet was caregiver to her husband, Werner, throughout the last years of his life during his battle with multiple sclerosis. Their love for each other and their life together set the example of what marriage is and can be. When Janet’s own illness developed rapidly in the last weeks of her life, shocking all who knew her, she handled every moment with courage and a profound trust in something greater. She felt, spoke of, and emanated a deep sense of connection and love for all that is.

Janet passed away in her home on October 8, 2020. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew her, including: her son Gary (Anne); daughter Tina (Adam) Lepper; grandson Tyler (Wendey) and great-granddaughter Olivia.

It was Janet’s wish that there be no services after her passing. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Janet’s local Allen County SPCA at or the global mission of Deep Peace Trust at Janet supported both of these organizations because she loved animals and advocated for creating a more peaceful world.

The family sends love and gratitude to each of you who remembers her. Please feel free to “Add A Memory” to share here.

I have a lot of wonderful memories of time spent with the family. Always welcoming with a smile and laughter. I feel like Jan was a second Mom to me, and she was always such a blessing to my Mom and the rest of my family.

Words can't really express my sympathy on the loss of such a beautiful soul...I know you will all carry her her with you.

Much Love

Aunt Jani knew how to make everything fun. Her laugh was infectious. She also had a matter of fact approach, which was on display when I arrived at her house hoping to spend the night before traveling home after a business trip. All beds were taken, however, her massage table was available. “It’s a bit narrow,” she said, “but if you roll off, you’ll be just as comfortable on the floor.” She sent me home the next morning with a bagel and a hug.

Prayers for Tina, Gary and to the extended families. Janet and Werner lived next door for almost as long as I can remember. Janet was always very helpful if anything was needed and we were always glad to return the favor. A donation has been made in Janet's name to the SPCA, because I know she felt the same as I do with our furry friends.

Gary and I have been best friends for more than 40 years. I have many fond memories of spending time with his family.

Jan was kind, sweet and caring. I greatly appreciated her beautiful smile and positive attitude. She always greeted us all with open arms and a welcoming embrace. Her sense of humor was always evident and I never once felt unwelcome.

I haven’t seen her a lot in recent years but when I did the warmth and love were always abundant. She was like a second mom to me when I was young and I’ll be forever grateful for the positive example she was to me in those formative years.
