Richard Allan Loughrie

Richard Allan Loughrie of Catharpin, VA, age 70, died unexpectedly on July 3, 2018.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Kacey Michelle Loughrie, and her mother, Amy Spille Loughrie. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Hebb Loughrie, his father, Albert William Loughrie, and his brother, Albert William Loughrie, Jr.
Richard was born to Albert and Hazel Loughrie in Washington, DC on September 3, 1947. He graduated from Herndon High School in 1965. He studied engineering at Virginia Tech, where he played shortstop on the baseball team. After a few semesters, Richard left college to enlist in the U.S. Army and he ultimately attained the rank of sergeant. Richard served in Vietnam and was decorated for valor and received the Purple Heart medal. Following his discharge from the Army, Richard embarked on a 40-year career in the automotive repair industry. He was a master automotive mechanic, specializing in Toyota vehicles.
After his retirement, Richard enjoyed road racing, collecting cars, and repairing and working on his many cars. Immediately prior to his death, Richard had purchased a home on Lake Anna where he planned to enjoy his retirement on the water. Richard was a kind and passionate father who encouraged his daughter, Kacey, to pursue her goals.
Richard made people smile and was a gifted storyteller who would share his many interesting life experiences. He loved to travel and made many trips across the United States. Richard was generous and loved his family, and he was passionate about living life to the fullest and having fun. Richard was an active competitive sports car driver and team owner with NASA Mid Atlantic, and he supported the Wounded Warrior Project by giving disabled veterans rides in his vintage race cars.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 11:00 am, with the family receiving friends an hour prior to the service at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service. Interment will be at a later date. A reception will follow at Amy Loughrie’s house on Lake Anna, which is where Richard spent much of his time out on the water with family and friends. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Richard’s life.
