Obituary of Barbara Y Story
Barbara Young Story, age 92 of Carmel, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2018. She was born in Chicago to the late Ulysses Simpson “Sam” and Grace Pandè Young on November 29, 1926. Barbara graduated from DePauw University where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and she earned her Master’s degree from Ball State University. She married Vaughn Story on July 14, 1951 and they raised three daughters. Barbara was an educator for many years, starting her career in Lakeville, moving on to Muncie, and then spending most of her teaching years in the fifth grade at College Wood Elementary in Carmel. Barb loved sports and competition, playing tennis, swimming, and ice skating in her younger days and taking up golf and bowling upon her retirement. She was an avid sports fan and strong supporter of the Colts, Pacers, Butler basketball, Indiana University and Purdue University football and basketball, and PGA golf. Books and reading were a passion of hers and she was a part of two book clubs. Whenever possible, Barbara enjoyed traveling, especially to historical sites. She also took great pleasure in serving as a volunteer at St. Vincent Carmel Hospital. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Vaughn Dubè Story. She was also predeceased by her brother, James Young. Barb is survived by daughters Ann (Phil) Hughes of Cicero, Jill Brunic of Greenwood, and Jane (Mike) Carver of Gig Harbor, Washington. Barb is also survived by grand-children: Corey Hughes, Taylor (Tony Allanson) Hughes, Skye (Matt Gibson) Hughes, Travis Brunic, Trent (Ashley) Brunic, Mitch (Amy) Carver, Allie Carver, TJ (Katie) Carver, and Sarah (Nick) Vanderlinda. Fondly known as GG for Great-Grandma, Barb is survived by ten great grand-children: Trevor, Bella, Eli, Collins, Story, Hank, Arizona, Tatum, Maren, and Gracie. Barbara also has other loving relatives and many wonderful friends. The family wishes to thank all of her caring friends who looked out for her, as well as all medical personnel and the Barrington staff members who cared for Barbara. There will be a private burial at the Carmel Cemetery. A service will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, with visitation beginning at 3 PM and a Celebration of Life at 4 PM. Barbara was treasured by her family, former students, and many close friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family requests in lieu of flowers that any memorial donations be given to Carmel Clay Education Foundation, Carmel Clay Public Library, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
