Sylvia (Huss) Hanselmann, 85. Jan. 16, 2021. In her role as a teacher and school administrator, Fort Wayne native and long-time Indianapolis resident Sylvia Hanselmann touched the lives of countless young people. During her remarkable 40-plus year career, Sylvia was a founding faculty member – and later, lower school director of Fort Wayne’s Canterbury School. She served in many roles at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, including guidance counselor and director of learning services. A life-long proponent of the importance of education, Sylvia was a graduate of Indiana University and held two masters degrees in education from St. Francis University and Ball State University. She continued her education in post-graduate work at Butler University.
Sylvia volunteered for a variety of institutions, including the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and, more recently, the Eiteljorg Museum. She and husband Jay hosted contestants of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. An avid quilter, she was a devotee of the arts and loved chocolate, ice cream, and red wine.
Sylvia is survived by her devoted husband Jay Hanselmann; children Joe (Anne Slaughter) Andrew, John Andrew, Barbara (Bruce Milem) Andrew, and David (Caroline Paulison) Andrew; step-children Jeff (Susy) Hanselmann, Jennifer (Tom Cox) Hanselmann, Julie (Adrian Davies) Hanselmann Davies, and John Hanselmann; her brother Ned Huss; 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
