Hazel Mason Jeter

Jeter, Hazel Mason, 97, of Varina, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 30, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Jeter, Sr.; and her daughter, Dorothy J. Cheatham (Carlton). The daughter of a Civil War Veteran, Silas D. Mason, Hazel was a former employee of Millhiser Bag Company and an avid gardener. She supplied her family, friends, and neighbors with fresh and canned vegetables for many years. Mrs. Jeter loved being outdoors, working her garden, cutting the grass, and planting more vegetables. She also took care of those who needed her help and she watched the neighbors children when they came home from school. Hazel was a caregiver, a homemaker, a wife, and a mother. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Mildred J. Watson (Lee), Mary V. Jeter, and Jessie J. Thomas; and her devoted son, James R. Jeter, Jr. (Denise); 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and her furry, four-legged friend, Gabby Lee, her cat. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 4 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231; where a funeral service will be conducted on Friday, December 5 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Washington Memorial Park.
