Josephine DeSoto, 87, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2019 with family by her side. She was born in Manhattan, NY after her family settled in the USA following their journey from Santander, Spain and then moved to Norfolk, VA when she was 6 months old. She is preceded in death by her parents, Marcos and Bonifacia Abascal, and niece, Lucia Garcea Cannon.
She is survived by her sister, Teresa Garcea, nephew and nieces, Mark Garcea, Maria Garcea Wise, Rita Garcea Amorese, and Anne Marie Garcea Yeattes, cousin Sister Anita Abascal, and 5 great nieces and nephews whom she helped raise, Sara Turner, Mark Cannon, Michael Cannon, Catherine Aebel, and Adam Cannon, and 5 great-great nieces and nephews, Gregory, Luka, Hunter, Jaxon, and Hannah.
She was devoted to her family, Catholic faith, and BINGO! If you ever were to ask her how she was doing, she would tell you with a big smile on her face, “I’m fine”! Her love and humor made all feel welcomed to be in her company.
A Memorial Mass will held on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 10 am at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Inurnment to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. You may offer your condolences at www.kellumfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and School.
