History

Rhoton Funeral Home was a direct outgrowth of the Carrollton Mercantile Company, founded in 1903 by C.E. Hudson and J.C. Davis. In April 1911, J.T. Rhoton and his family moved to Carrollton from Garland, and he assumed management of the general merchandise store. By 1915, the owners had changed the firm’s name to Hudson and Davis Company, which had originated in Garland in 1895.

Steady growth and service additions

The company eventually had 20 dry goods stores throughout Texas. Rhoton oversaw the operation of 3: Carrollton, Plano and Midlothian. In 1923, Rhoton purchased the company and renamed it Rhoton Dry Goods and Undertaking Company.

J.T. Rhoton’s son, Holman, also joined the business. Rhoton Dry Goods and Undertaking Company remained on Carrollton square’s east corner of College Avenue and Denton Drive until the undertaking portion of the business moved, giving the residents of Carrollton a complete mortuary facility.

In late 1951, construction began on a new 2-story brick building at the northwest corner of Interstate 35 and Crosby Road. Through necessity, the firm operated an ambulance service for more than 40 years, until Holman Rhoton donated the emergency vehicles to the cities of Carrollton and Farmers Branch.

Eventually in 1962, Weiland-Merritt Inc. of Dallas bought Rhoton Funeral Home, renaming it Rhoton, Weiland-Merritt 2 years later.

Our funeral home founder

Holman D. Rhoton was born in 1902 and became the 1st licensed embalmer in Carrollton. In 1963, on the 50th anniversary of the town’s incorporation, the City of Carrollton honored Holman for his civic contributions. On June 9, 1977, the Texas Funeral Directors Association honored him for 50 years of service in the funeral profession.

Today, Rhoton Funeral Home is a member of the Dignity Memorial® network, the largest group of licensed funeral service providers in North America.
