Demaine Funeral Home dates back to 1789, when families turned to their local cabinetmaker for caskets. Early one morning this custom brought an exhausted and cold messenger to the shop’s front door with the news that General George Washington, at the age of 67, had died. The messenger had ridden 14 miles with General Washington's measurements, so the lead-lined mahogany casket could be made to fit.
Our historical legacy
In 1841, Demaine was located at the corner of Fairfax and Prince streets in the bustling Scottish seaport town of Alexandria. Our funeral home is one of the oldest businesses in Virginia. Early ledgers include the services for other prominent statesman and Virginia families as well.
Demaine Funeral Home moved to 817 King Street at an undetermined date. In 1952, we relocated to our present location on South Washington Street in Alexandria.
Innovative funeral care
The move from a storefront location to a 4-story white-column funeral home with on-site parking, flower shop and a chapel and parlors—capable of accommodating over 400 guests—was a significant step in our lustrous history.
Innovations were introduced in the form of a smoking lounge and family room, where family privacy could be provided during the service. In 1968, Demaine Funeral Home expanded to the outlying community of Springfield.
Today, we remain committed to providing families innovative funeral and memorial services paired with local, compassionate care.
