The mission of our founder, Hyatt M. Patterson, was to provide high-quality funeral services in Atlanta by recruiting a professional and dedicated staff. Hyatt M. Patterson always knew his life’s work must be directed to helping others. Acting on this desire, he began his apprenticeship in 1872 in Cleveland and worked there for 9 years. In 1881, while on his honeymoon, he traveled with his English-born bride to Atlanta for the Cotton States Exposition. After seeing the town, he told his bride of one year that they would live in Atlanta. Two days later, he started work with George Boaz at the Markham House, a landmark hotel in the city. The following year he purchased the Markham House and founded Patterson’s Funeral Home in 1882.
The business that he founded would become a cornerstone of modern funeral service. Notably, he was the first person in the southeastern United States to build a funeral home from the ground up. The H.M. Patterson – Spring Hill location is the longest continuously operating funeral home in the southeast. Hyatt was also responsible for many other innovations in funeral service and would become regarded as one of Georgia’s outstanding citizens. Before his death, he earned the affection of thousands. He was generous to everyone throughout the community. As a result of his vision, the name H.M. Patterson & Son has been a household word in Atlanta ever since.
