A stately and historic Atlanta funeral home
Located on Spring Street in fast-growing midtown Atlanta, our historic building is one of the oldest remaining original structures in the area, and our beautiful grounds are one of the few green spaces. Today, Spring Hill is surrounded by bustling commerce from nearby Georgia Tech. But the stately presence of our funeral home stands in sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of midtown and offers families an easily accessible location that also provides quiet elegance and comfort.
From the moment you step foot inside our facilities, you will appreciate the historic elegance of our funeral home and chapel, and the standard of excellence our staff delivers. Our preserved heritage is one of the qualities that makes H.M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill Chapel a household name in the state of Georgia and a trusted funeral home for the families of Atlanta.
An architectural icon
Designed by nationally renowned architect, Philip T. Shutze, our facility was completed in 1928 specifically for the use of H.M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill Chapel and is considered one of the finest of its kind in the country. Our historically sophisticated yet welcoming exterior stands in lovely contrast against the high rises and skyscrapers of the city.
The inside of our facility is equally as impressive, including 18th and 19th century antiques and imported furnishings, most of which were collected by H.M. Patterson and his wife during their travels to Europe. Intricately carved moldings, stately pillars, gorgeous chandeliers and cathedral ceilings combine to make the chapel a truly extraordinary space for your service. A pipe organ and grand piano add a sophisticated ambiance to any service and are available for use during services in the chapel.

Lush and pristine gardens
Our building and gardens were designed so that every window would offer a view of flowers. We take pride in our meticulously maintained green space, one of the few remaining in midtown Atlanta. With 2 formal gardens and 2 interior courtyard gardens, our facility offers an abundance of truly remarkable spaces for your service. On the north side of the building, families can find solitude in a sunken garden surrounded by a horseshoe driveway. Our grounds are exceptional spaces for personalized services meant to honor the memory of your loved one.
Our unique history
In 1881, Hyatt Meshack Patterson and his new bride, Clara Wakefield, visited Atlanta from Ohio for a honeymoon at the Cotton States Exposition. Mr. Patterson fell in love with the city, and he soon went to work for George Boaz of the Markham House Block. Patterson had the foresight to see the potential for a city that was rebuilding itself before his eyes, and he purchased Mr. Boaz’s building in 1882 and began Patterson’s Funeral Home. Just 4 short years later, tragedy struck as a stable next door to his mortuary caught fire, and Mr. Patterson’s funeral home was destroyed. That same year, he moved his business to Peachtree St. near Five Points, mirroring the city’s growth in that direction.
A growing legacy
Mr. Patterson’s only son, Fred, joined his father in business at the Peachtree St. location, and after 8 years, they moved the business, in 1904, to North Forsyth St. next to the Carnegie Library. The new Patterson was the first building in the South designed especially for a funeral directing business. One year later, Hyatt made Fred a partner, and the business officially became H.M. Patterson & Son.
When Hyatt passed away in 1923, his son inherited the business and hoped to build an accessible yet quiet facility on a hill overlooking trees and the city of Atlanta. His desire was to build an English manor-style house in honor of his father and English-born mother. Spring Hill opened in 1928 on the corner of Spring and 10th St. where we still reside today.
It is our hope that you continue to find in our services a reflection of the vision first realized by H.M. Patterson over a century ago. His dedication to serving the community and comforting families remains our primary focus, and we are honored to continue his legacy in funeral service.
Named an Atlanta landmark
In May 2018, H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel was awarded landmark status by the Atlanta Urban Design Commission. A unique Midtown display of bygone southern grandeur, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the Atlanta Preservation Center both voiced agreements as our building and portions of our outdoor gardens were deemed worthy of this prestigious status.
Throughout the years, H.M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill Chapel has developed close affiliations with many churches, synagogues, temples and other places of worship in the area. With our location being in midtown Atlanta, we strive to partner with many contacts and organizations in the area and act as a liaison for families in need of services provided. Our network of speakers, bilingual funeral directors and interpreters can help assist you with any of your needs.
H.M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill Chapel, has a heritage of commitment to service. We are honored to provide tours and educational seminars to theological seminary students and other groups.
