Let's start with a story
McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel offers families the option to customize their experiences. One way we do this is through personalized services that celebrate the memories and passions we share with our loved ones. Our staff will help you tell this story as we listen to your ideas and turn those ideas into a funeral or memorial service that creates a wonderful memory. We can design services as contemporary or traditional as you wish, including those with military honors, religious themes and catering.
Our team enjoys giving back to our community and being involved in worthwhile causes. We support organizations such as Charlotte Region, American Diabetes Association and Donate Life, as well as several places of worship and charities.

For more than 110 years, the McEwen Funeral Service family has served the Charlotte area. Our journey began around 1908 when R.J. McEwen began making coffins in Mint Hill, North Carolina, to help those who lost loved ones to a flu epidemic. In 1915, R.J.'s son, Carl J. McEwen, began working with him, and they later stocked caskets in their Mint Hill hardware store. In 1921, they added additional services and purchased a hearse for funeral services. As their business grew, R.J. and Carl opened McEwen Funeral Home of Mint Hill in 1926.
In addition, McEwen Funeral Service provided ambulance service for several decades. At the time, few places in the United States had airplane ambulance service, and the McEwens provided the only option in the Southeast. Their bi-plane saved many lives in the 30s and was eventually donated to the war effort at the request of the federal government.
Growth and expansion
As a result of our strong reputation in the community, McEwen Funeral Service grew rapidly. In 1935, we opened a location in Monroe. We added another location on East Morehead Street in Charlotte in 1947. As the business continued to grow, we expanded with locations in Derita in 1972 and Pineville in 1993.
Today, we continue to innovate and offer specialized funeral and memorial services for all our families. It's our hope to provide the same quality care on which we were founded while meeting the changing needs of the Charlotte area.
