Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home in Greensboro has a long history serving families in Guilford County and the surrounding Piedmont Triad metropolitan region.

A century of service

In the early 1900s, the late Henry L. Hanes founded Hanes Funeral Home, which was then located at the corner of West Sycamore and Greene Streets. This was the 1st exclusive funeral home in North Carolina, and the 1st in Greensboro to provide motorized ambulance and funeral equipment.

In 1922, our funeral home moved to the corner of West Market Street and South Eugene Street, establishing a modern chapel complete with air conditioning, instrumental organ and private family room.

Funeral home leadership

Mr. Hanes died unexpectedly in 1947. In 1955, Mrs. Hanes-Bell asked Al Lineberry Sr. to purchase her stock in the funeral home, and our funeral home's name changed to Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home. Lineberry led the funeral home into what would become among the largest providers of services in the Greensboro area and all of North Carolina.

Through his leadership, innovative changes and dedication to the improvement of mankind through worship and personal involvement, Al expanded the business to 3 locations with cemeteries and crematories in Greensboro, New Bern and Eden, North Carolina. He became a spokesman of funeral service and was elected to be president of both the North Carolina Funeral Directors Association and the National Selected Morticians in 1964. He later served in the North Carolina State House of Representatives for several terms.

Al Lineberry Jr. is following what his father and Mr. Hanes began. He is a leading member of the funeral service team and has been an industry leader for years. He, along with his father and brother, Scott, are the only recipients of the Certified Funeral Service Providers in Guilford County. Al Jr. has been president of the International Order of Golden Rule Funeral Directors as well as many other state, local civic and business organizations.

Growing with Greensboro

Since our founding, Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home has kept pace with the progress and development of Greensboro. We began in 1919 on Sycamore St. and moved two years later to Market St. In 1966, we built our second location on Vanstory St. and in 1968 moved to our main location on North Elm Street. Our third location, Sedgefield, on Gate City Blvd., was built in 1994.

The caring professionals of Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home are proud to continue providing quality funeral service, supporting our community and making it a great place to live for many more generations.
