History

Our roots trace back to the 20th century when Thomas J. McHugh originally established the funeral home.  He had been employed for more than 10 years by his uncle, Thomas J. Turley, at Sullivan & Turley Funeral Home. Upon Mr. Turley’s death in 1942, Mr. McHugh was appointed the manager.

A Manchester funeral home for everyone

The funeral home served the Irish Catholic community of Manchester with distinction and was located on Manchester Street for several decades. Mr. McHugh’s son, Kevin T. McHugh, joined in the operation of the business, and Mr. McHugh remained active until his death in 1976. Kevin was assisted in the business by Maurice April and, together, they grew the funeral home to serve families of all faiths, beliefs, cultures and backgrounds.

A growing business

The new funeral home was built at the corner of the Hanover and Beech streets. Kevin passed away in July 1992 and Maurice assumed the role of manager until his retirement in 2001.

"Thank you to Chelsea Graves and staff of McHugh Funeral Home for your exceptional support and assistance with our mother's funeral and cemetery arrangements. I was put at ease the moment I met Chelsea. She was compassionate, professional and so helpful organizing every aspect of my mother's funeral, including beautiful flowers, urn, obituary,

cemetery planning and scheduling, paying special attention to honoring my mother's and our wishes. There was never a moment when I felt pressured or rushed to make a decision which meant the world to me. She guided me every step of the way, respecting and answering any questions i had. Reverend Debb Ellen officiated my mother's service both at the funeral Home and the cemetery. She was so wonderful. We met to sit and talk about my mom, her life, family, hobbies and special memories. She made me very comfortable and made sure that our mother was celebrated for the unique and special person she was. The funeral service was very heartwarming and personal in which Reverend Debb included the many things mom loved and how important family was to her. She added some sweet personality traits of our mother, which brought a smile to all our faces. In honor of mom's love of daily Dunkin Coffee, Reverend Debb included coffee beans at the gravesite in which family sprinkled afew. The grandchildren loved participating. We will certainly refer McHugh to family and friends . Thank You Chelsea and staff for the special experience and helping our family to be in the moment, with our beloved mom."
