Unique memorials commemorate Miami’s history

Special landscaping feature at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn NorthOur 66-acre cemetery includes several unique memorials. We have a large memorial dedicated to both the survivors and those lost during the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. The storm was the most intense hurricane to make landfall in the United States at the time and the 3rd-worst Atlantic hurricane ever. The Category 5 hurricane killed 408 people, including 259 World War I veterans living in the area.

We also have a Masonic memorial in front of our mausoleum and several flags for the unknown Cuban freedom fighters buried here. The flags stand as a reminder of the Freedom Flyers, who transported Cubans to Miami twice a day, 5 times a week, from 1965 to 1973. About 300,000 refugees made the flight from Cuba to Miami, and we honor those brave pilots who made the journey.
