A Homestead, Florida, resident for over 4 decades, Carlos attended Neva King Cooper Elementary, Homestead Junior High and graduated from South Dade Senior High School in 1978. In 2007, following his retirement from the Ford Motor Company Parts Division after 29 years, Carlos attended Miami-Dade College and completed double majors, graduating with an Associate in Science degree in funeral services and an Associate of Arts degree in criminal justice. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer and has been certified by Matthews Cremation Division as a crematory operator. Carlos has been married since 1981 and has 2 sons and 5 grandchildren.
