James was born and raised in Staunton, Illinois, graduating from the Staunton School District and St. Louis Community College at Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri. Jim is a third-generation funeral director, following in his father's and grandfather’s footsteps. From a young age, he worked for his father at the family funeral home—cutting grass, washing cars, etc.—before becoming the co-owner of the family business. Jim and his wife reside in Springfield and have four children, some already grown and one just entering the teen years.
