Traditional and contemporary funeral services in Temple, Texas

Located in a single-story ranch-style building on Airport Road, Scanio-Harper Funeral Home is the newest funeral home facility in Bell County. Designed and decorated to create calm and provide comfort, it serves people from all walks of life and all faiths.

With a large-capacity funeral chapel and a reception center, we plan and host services that speak to the unique life of your loved one—whether that's a traditional religious funeral or a contemporary and upbeat celebration of life.

When you first meet with a Scanio-Harper funeral director, we'll ask questions about your loved one: what he liked to do, what she cherished, how he thought about the world, or how she liked to spend time. You can inspire us with a memory of your loved one, a hobby that grew into a passion, a favorite music genre or a signature style. From reading to running, gardening to gospel, prize-winning horses to prize-winning pies, we take the things that mattered most to your loved one and work to gracefully weave them together to create a personal and heartfelt memorial.

Our team is experienced in planning catered events. Whether it's a breakfast buffet after a morning service, cake and coffee in the afternoon, or a full dinner reception, just let us know what you have in mind. We'll handle food, drinks, decor and more. We'll also help you write an obituary, create a multimedia tribute video for the service and assist you in choosing music.

Cremation services

A loved one's urn or ashes may be picked up at the funeral home, or we can deliver them to your home in person or by mail.

Davis Harper was part of a family legacy that provided funeral services for Central Texas for more than 100 years. His great-grandfather, A.J. Hewett, opened his first funeral home at Second Street and Avenue A in Temple in 1911. His grandfather, Sam Davis, joined the funeral home in 1944, and his father, Dan Harper, joined the funeral home in 1953.

When Dan retired, he and his partner sold their funeral home to an international corporation, but Davis Harper felt that he should continue the tradition of owning a family-run funeral home, and in 1997, he joined Philip Scanio to open Scanio-Harper Funeral Home.

Philip had been employed by Dan and his partner from 1966 until 1972 and continued his funeral service at a North Texas funeral home until 1975, when he started his insurance business.

Davis began medical retirement on August 15, 2010, and died on March 4, 2017.

Scanio-Harper Funeral Home joined the Dignity Memorial® network in 2020. Philip remains on staff as a consultant.
