History

Our Windsor funeral home history

Anderson Funeral Home & Cremation Centre originally began as H.S. Anderson Funeral Home. Located in the heart of downtown Windsor, it was founded in 1920 by Herbert Samuel Anderson and originally located in the west end of Windsor in the Towne of Sandwich. H.S. Anderson and his wife, Irma, owned and operated a furniture store directly across the street from our building.

Anderson, realizing there was a need for a funeral home in the small community, transitioned from the furniture business into the funeral industry. He attained his funeral director’s license from Banting Institute in Toronto and was among the 1st licensed funeral directors in Ontario.

Growth, expansion

Front exterior building at Anderson Funeral Home & Cremation CentreAs our funeral home continued to grow over the years, a larger facility became a necessity, so we moved to a larger building in downtown Windsor and also operated an ambulance service. In the 1950s, H.S. Anderson Funeral Home moved to its current location, where the family constructed a 20,000-square-foot facility. At that time, our facility was among the largest funeral home establishments in Canada.

Anderson’s sons—Ernie, Bruce, Stuart and Austin—were all raised and active in the business. It was not uncommon for the boys to be called out of school in the middle of the day to assist on funerals and ambulance runs.

In 1986, H.S. Anderson Funeral Home was purchased, and the company now operates as Anderson Funeral Home and Cremation Centre. Although our Windsor funeral home has changed throughout the years, our commitment to providing families caring and compassionate service has never changed.
