Michael "Mike" Ignatus Barrett

Dedicated lifelong partner, father, and friend of many, passed away on March 10th at the age of 79 in Ottawa, Ontario. Michael was born to Isatella Williams and Gilbert Barrett on September 30th, 1943, the youngest of 4 brothers. He is survived by his older brother Horatio Laing (Victor Laing, Richard Laing and Margaret Laing). Michael finished his studies in Jamaica while maintaining a passion for mechanics. He began his career in the Transportation Industry by driving the Jamaica Omnibus Service (JOS) in Kingston which led him to then immigrate to Canada to work for OC Transpo as a Bus Driver and Dispatcher where he retired after 35 years in 2008. Shortly after starting his career, he met his longtime partner Wilma Angela Prout, and they spent 50 years together and welcomed their only daughter, often referred to as their “pride and joy” Sarah Angeni Prout - Barrett (Peter Rupcic) in 1987. Through the years, Michael enjoyed cooking for his family, and making friends wherever he went. Michael was a stranger to no one and found great purpose in the successes joys of those around him. Michael was authentically and wholeheartedly always there for those in his life. A visitation for Michael will be held on Monday, March 20, 2023 from 5:00 to 9:00pm At McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, ON. Michael’s funeral service will be held in the chapel at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Hope Cemetery.
