First established in 1849, Glenwood Memorial Gardens was originally known as Glenwood Cemetery. The first burial at Glenwood took place in February 1850 and it was originally located at Ridge Avenue and 27th Street in the North Philadelphia Section of Philadelphia. Glenwood was named for the street adjacent to the cemetery, Glenwood Avenue. In 1938, due to eminent domain by the City of Philadelphia, Glenwood Cemetery and all its burials were moved to its current location in beautiful Delaware County.
The “new” Glenwood
The "new" cemetery, Glenwood Memorial Gardens, was established in 1923. The first burial took place in February 1924. While the original Glenwood was a monument cemetery, the new Glenwood incorporated flat bronze memorialization and beautiful features in most of the gardens.
A growing business
In 1996, the first of 3 community mausoleums opened. The new mausoleum not only gave families a new choice for burial of their loved ones, but also provided a chapel so families could hold services to celebrate their loved one’s life.
Centuries of service
With burials in our cemetery dating back to the 1700s, Glenwood Memorial Gardens has been an important part of the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley community for hundreds of years. We continue to embrace our remarkable history and strive to provide services and products that meet the diverse and evolving needs of today’s families.
