History

Homegrown heritage

Born in Richmond, Virginia, shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War, Henry W. Woody lived all his life in the city and established the Woody Funeral Home near Historic St. John’s Church in 1905. Due largely to his reputation of professionalism and integrity, the business outgrew the original facility and a new, more modern building was built at 25th Street and Jefferson Avenue in 1916.

By 1926, the funeral home had doubled in size and saw the addition of a modern, church-like sanctuary. Mr. Woody continued to serve families of the greater Richmond area from this location until his death in 1958.

Growing business

Front Exterior of Woody Funeral Home-ParhamWoody Funeral Home was moved to Laburnum Avenue in 1966 and opened as Richmond’s first garden-type funeral home. Since 1966, 3 additional locations have opened. Woody Funeral Home-Parham includes a crematory, which serves all of our locations and was the first in Richmond to be associated with a funeral home.

Since the early 1990s, we have been a proud member of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers. Each family we serve, regardless of faith or tradition can expect to be cared for with dignity, professionalism, respect and compassion.

Continuing commitment

Mr. Woody began our company with a commitment to a high standard of service excellence, and throughout our history we have continued to lead and innovate while maintaining those high standards of service. The staff at Woody Funeral Home-Parham is proud to uphold this heritage and continued commitment to our community.

"Woody's Funeral Home treated me with such compassionate care and thoughtfulness about my daughter's passing from the very first time I met with them. I had a planned funeral which is what I recommend. Everything was so special and cared for with wonderful attention to my feelings. The dignitymemorial.com site is exquisitely managed. They surprised me with the details. I was given a video of her photos for others to view and they made my daughter's Memorial the most beautiful one ever."

"I believe that the thing that made the experience so much less stressful was that I had met with Woody's about 5 years before mother died and had selected everything for her burial needs. I even paid for it then. So when she died I had more time to talk with the funeral director. She wanted to 'know about' Mother and she really did by the time we were through talking. Every detail was perfect."
