About

Since 1889, the Earthman family has helped Houston-area families say goodbye with dignity, compassion and care. Five generations in, we’re more than funeral professionals—we’re trusted friends who guide you through some of life’s most challenging moments.

There are six Earthman locations. Earthman Memory Gardens Cemetery was opened in 1953 by Mr. James B. Earthman Jr. and his wife, Blanche. The couple was committed to a high standard of service, and we’ve continued to lead and innovate while maintaining that standard for the families of Baytown and beyond. We invite you to visit us and see how we’re different. We’d love to get to know you.

Cemetery gates open at 8 a.m. each day. They remain open until dusk. Please call 281-422-8181 if you have questions or concerns.

Cemetery property for every family

Cemetery grounds at Earthman Memory Gardens CemeteryOur peaceful Garth Road memorial park, known to many as Baytown Memorial Cemetery, has long been a place where families come for comfort and connection. Here, you’ll find a range of memorialization options that reflect your traditions and wishes.

Some families choose in-ground burial, while others prefer cremation niches or the quiet dignity of aboveground entombment. Mausoleum spaces are available both in the open-air garden mausoleum and within the shelter of an indoor mausoleum, offering comfort in every season.

Tranquility Estates Garden is a thoughtfully designed space for families who wish to be memorialized together. Nearby, Tranquility Cremation Garden provides spaces for ashes. Throughout the cemetery, gardens designed for flat markers or upright monuments allow you to create a resting place as personal and unique as the life it honors.

Earthman Baytown Funeral Home

The cemetery works hand in hand with Earthman Baytown Funeral Home, just a few miles south on Garth Road. There’s plenty of room in its welcoming chapel for family and friends to gather, share memories and find comfort together. The funeral home staff takes the time to listen and understand what matters most to you, and helps create a meaningful service.

The history of Earthman funeral homes and cemeteries

Cemetery grounds at Earthman Memory Gardens CemeteryJames Bradshaw Earthman Sr. began his career as a blacksmith and livery service provider in Taylor, Texas. In those days, funeral homes were rare, and it was common for those in horse-related trades to lend a hand when a death occurred. When the town purchased a horse-drawn hearse, families often turned to Earthman, the trusted proprietor of the local livery stable, to help with their funeral needs.

In 1889, providing funeral services became James’ full-time profession. His company was among the first licensed providers in Texas.

A move to Houston

In 1904, James and a friend, railroad surveyor J.C. McCarty, moved to Houston and established the Earthman and McCarty Undertaking Company at 715 Main St. The company did well and, in 1924, James and J.C. built a funeral home at 2420 Fannin St. After J.C.’s death, the company became the J.B. Earthman Company.

Earthman Memory Gardens CemeteryAfter James B. Earthman Sr. died in 1931, James B. Earthman Jr. (J.B.), a St. Thomas High School and Rice University graduate, left his successful architectural career to manage the company. His wife, Blanche Bastien Earthman, worked with J.B. on daily operations. When Blanche earned her funeral director’s license, she was among the first women in Texas to do so.

A family tradition

J.B. pioneered funeral pre-planning, founding a burial insurance company in the 1930s. Together, J.B. and Blanche built Earthman Funeral Directors & Cemeteries into one of the largest family-owned-and-operated funeral companies in the United States. Their children and grandchildren joined to manage and expand the business. Some of them are still involved today.
