The 2023 NFDA report also states that the national average cost of a funeral followed by cremation without an alternative cremation container and urn is $5,825. This is an 8.6% increase from 2021 and a 21.4% increase from 2014.

The NFDA figures below are average costs of a cremation with a memorial service, including embalming, a viewing, a container for cremation and an urn. These costs don't include cemetery property or a monument or marker. Many families opt for cremation without a viewing or memorial service, which reduces costs.

According to the NFDA, the average cost of a cremation in 2023 broke down like:
- Basic services fee for the funeral director and staff: $2,495
- Removal/transfer of the loved one to the funeral home: $395
- Embalming: $845

- Staff costs and use of the funeral home for the viewing: $475
- Staff costs and use of the funeral home for the service: $550
