History

The timeline of Jones Funeral home begins in 1977, when Janis and Jessie Jones Jr. and Mildred and Hilliard Buckner opened Buckner-Jones Funeral Home in Franklin, Louisiana, after recognizing a need for an additional funeral provider in St. Mary Parish.

With a focus on service excellence and the Black community, the two families began to grow their operations. They opened a second location in 1979. They called it Buckner-Jones Chapel and it sat in the Siracusa subdivision on the outer city limits of Morgan City. Byron Jones, the eldest son of Janis and Jessie, joined the business that same year.

Buckner-Jones Chapel was moved in 1983 to 715 Sixth St. in Morgan City. Just a few years later, in 1986, the Buckners sold their interest in the business to the Jones family, who changed the name to reflect that decision.

Janis Jones, who'd been working in the St. Mary Parish School System until 1994, retired from her first career and became a licensed funeral director in 1997. Andre’ Jones, the second son of Janis and Jessie, joined the family business in 2004 and became a licensed funeral director in 2006.

That same year, the Franklin location was relocated to 1101 Main St. With a 2,000-square-foot chapel, Jones Funeral Home now had a place to hold large services and better meet the needs of the community. The company was also nearly ready for a third location, and in 2010, Jones Funeral Home acquired Alex Lovette Funeral Services in Jeanerette.

In 2013, the Jones family opened a fourth location in Houma.

Jessie Jones Jr. lived to be 83, passing on in 2018. His dedication to the families of Bayou Country lives on in the four funeral homes he helped establish. All the Jones Funeral homes became part of the Dignity Memorial family of funeral homes, crematories and cemeteries in 2023.
