Dandy was born in Jakarta, Indonesia to Ping and Ansy Lee and along with his parents and two sisters migrated to the United States in 1970. He grew up in the Los Angeles area, mainly Arcadia. In 1990, Dandy married Hanneli (Hidalgo), and they settled in Rancho Santa Fe. In the years to follow, they would welcome two wonderful sons, Austin, and Justin.
After attending the University of California, San Francisco and obtaining his Doctor of Pharmacy in 1987, Dandy further pursued his education and obtained his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan (1991). Subsequently, and prior to his residency, he joined the Navy and served as the Medical Officer on the USS New Orleans. He then completed his anesthesia residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego (Balboa) and became a full-time staff member. After serving his country and the Navy, he then joined the Anesthesia Services Medical Group (ASMG) in San Diego and practiced at Tri-City Medical Center for over 22 years. At Tri-City, he was a member of various administrative committees and served as the Chief of Anesthesia for two years, eventually becoming the Medical Director of the Tri-City Perio-Operative Area. In 2022, Dandy changed his anesthesia practice from Tri-City Medical Center to Scripps Green Hospital.
Dandy was widely known for his great efficiency and precision which resulted in phenomenal care for his patients. His patients would often comment on his peaceful and calming demeanor, while colleagues and staff would attest to his quick, efficient, and tireless work ethic. Even when faced with the most challenging circumstances or cases, Dandy could be counted on to provide consistent and outstanding leadership and support. As stated by many, his professional and personal qualities truly embodied the ideal anesthesiologist.
Although Dandy worked many hours, his love and dedication towards family always came first. He was incredibly supportive and selfless when it came to helping others, but most of all, his wife, and sons. He was a constant presence at the boys’ sporting events, school activities, family gatherings and other monumental occasions. He was also a stabilizing influence within his extended family and was truly beloved. Through his consistent generosity and kindness, Dandy exemplified a wonderful husband, father, colleague, and friend.
As many will attest, he was an extremely humble person, even after achieving great professional and personal success. He would freely share his experience and knowledge with others and his pursuit of giving back was admirable. Dandy leaves a void that will be impossible to fill but his legacy will continue to live among us. While we will all miss his fun laugh, big smile, and very humble heart, he will continue to be deeply respected and loved by all who had the true honor of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife, Hanneli, two sons, Austin and Justin, two sisters, Julie (Wattier) and Anita (Bostre), an aunt, Dian (Lewono), an uncle, Hardy (Bharata), and an extended family of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to set up a scholarship in honor of Dandy. The memorial scholarship will assist college bound senior(s) at Wai’anae High School, where Justin currently teaches.
